Character Profile

Character
Character Name: Ariel
Series: Disney's The Little Mermaid
Gender: Female
Age & Canon Point: 16 years old; During the first movie; shortly after defeating Ursula and being changed into a human permanently by her father, King Triton. Due to the film not making it clear exactly how much time passes between defeating Ursula and Ariel's marriage to Prince Eric, I'm going to pull her from just prior to her marriage.

Abilities & Physical Abnormalities:

Ariel's true form is actually a Mermaid - However, she's been turned into a human by her father, King Triton. Shecannot change back (without her father's spell) so she will certainly act a little odd considering that she's spent the majority of her 16 years as an inhabitant of the sea, rather than land.

Aside from that, she doesn't really have any stand-out abilities other than her beautiful voice when she sings.

Personality:

Ariel is a very inquisitive, intelligent and free-spirited young woman. Ever since she was young, she has had an inescapable fascination with all things above the sea - that is, everything above and beyond her reach as a mermaid. She's the youngest of eight sisters and, thus, when she was still a mermaid, she was often able to sneak off and go do her own thing - something that undoubtedly enabled her fascination of the human world to soar to such heights.

She's also an avid collector of all things related to the Human world; all of which were painstakingly salvaged from various wreckages of ships - something that shows she had little fear of dark, dangerous, shark-infested locations - and it also demonstrated her devotion to the human world. Her enthusiasm to learn more about the human world led her to visit wrecked ships and it is evident that Ariel is a very courageous young woman. This, combined with the sheer naivety of a sixteen year old, often places her in perilous situations, causing great worry to the people who care about her.

She was dissatisfied with life under the sea - despite being a Princess and having a doting father, she always dreamed of going to the land and meeting humans. She was, and still is, extremely curious of how people live in comparison to Mermaids. So much so that she often enjoyed daydreaming about the possible usages of all her amazing trinkets she has collected over the years, with the help of an eccentric seagull named Skuttle. She often turned to Skuttle for explanations as to what the particular human item she'd found actually was - this was usually incorrect and, thus, she has a slightly confused knowledge of the human world and the items found within it.

Ariel has a rebellious streak in that she often journeyed to the surface despite repeated warnings from her Father and his aide, Sebastian. She can also become extremely wrapped up in what she's doing, leading her to forget other tasks - like, for example, when she was supposed to perform with her sisters in a concert. She simply becomes blinded by her fascination in the human world which meant that she couldn't see or remember anything else. In that respect, she appears to have a one-track mind that is permanently set on the human world! She truly wished to visit land and spent most of her time day dreaming about what it would be like - how she would live and what she would do.

In short, Ariel was, and still is, a dreamer. Her sisters view their little sister as a total daydreamer, too. They find it difficult to see beyond life under the sea and to understand the youngest Princess. Therefore, Ariel often prefers to seek other company - particularly that of her good friend, Flounder. He doesn't exactly share her passion and enthusiasm for the world above sea, but he enjoys spending time with her and views her as a trust-worthy friend. This is because, above all else, Ariel truly is a good-natured, sweet girl. She often appears to have her head in the clouds rather than in the here and now. In addition to this, she's also a hopeless romantic and like many other teenage girls (human and mermaid!) she finds herself experiencing her first love, with a human.

"It looks just like him. It even has his eyes. "Why, Eric, run away with you? This is all so - so sudden... "

Upon seeing a young human Prince during one of her daring trips to the surface, Ariel's life has never been the same. She saved him from drowning and brought him back to shore, allowing herself a few precious moments alone with a real human and it was this small act of courage that changed her life. She then wished more than ever to be part of his world - she truly believed that she had fallen in love with this man and even doted upon a statue of the Prince, imagining what it would be like to be part of his world. This also highlights her naivety in that, despite only briefly meeting Eric, she is immediately convinced that he is the love of her life. Whether this is just the naive feelings of a girl experiencing her first love, or if Prince Eric is truly "The One" is another question entirely. However, it was this chance meeting with Eric that was the catalyst for Ariel - it persuaded her and gave her reason to visit the human world and prompted her to take a risk in visiting Ursula.

"I just don't see things the way he does. I just don't see how a world that makes such wonderful things could be bad."

In addition, Ariel can be quite stubborn and determined, particularly when it concerns said human world. This often leads to arguments with her father - even prompting him to destroy Ariel's trove of human treasures in a fit of anger due to Ariel's stubborn, unrelenting love for the human world. However, this action only pushed Ariel further into her obsession with the life above the sea - prompting her to take Ursula's offer. This shows that she has a tendency to be impulsive - an argument with her father and the lure of Prince Eric meant that it took very little persuasion to convince Ariel to undertake a perilous transformation. Whether through lack of foresight or careful consideration, Ariel trading in her voice for the bargain was a risky and dangerous thing for her to have done. It meant that her relationship with Eric didn't get off on the right foot. However, her skill in communicating through body language and the ability to adapt to the human world as quickly as she did, helped her immensely during the meagre three days Ursula gave her.

In terms of her appearance and mannerisms, Ariel is a slim young woman with flawlessly pale skin. Her main feature is her crimson red hair that sweeps down to her waist. Aside from that, she has an extremely expressive face - everything that she is feeling or thinking is immediately translated onto her face and it appears that Ariel would never be able to pull off a decent poker face. She wears her heart on her sleeve and her feelings on her face. She's also very fond of singing and even her spoken words are quite musical sounding. She's a very expressive person and quite literally sings her way through life. Music is very important to her and has been since she was very young, particularly since her father overcame his prejudice towards music (in the prequel movie).

However, like many redheads, she is cursed with a fiery temper - which often results in heated arguments and confrontations. This is visible when her Father destroyed her grotto - she argued with him and stubbornly refused to see his side of things and, after he destroyed everything, she was unable to handle her feelings and collapsed into a flood of tears. When she sets her sights on something, or someone, she'll stop at nothing to get to it with little thought about the process involved. She impulsive but her heart is in the right place. She truly believes in "Happily ever after" and will do just about anything to gain her own happy ending. She's also skilled at adapting to new situations which is fuelled by her desire to learn more about the world around her. In short, despite being stubborn and naive, Ariel is also inquisitive and courageous.

What are your plans for the character in-game?
I would love to see how Ariel would adapt to a setting like Balamb Garden - it's completely different to what she has been used to in terms of her experience with the human world. I'd love for her to meet a variety of people and to learn about magic as, being King Triton's daughter, I'm more than sure that she has the potential with magic. I'd also love to see her learn more about the world in which she's now a part - and to see how well she handles battles!
